The usual saree measures up to 5.5 meters of fabric; however, there are a lot of varieties and styles of sarees in the market nowadays. The origin of the saree can be traced back to up to 500 years back in Indus valley civilization, and it still holds space in Indian women’s wardrobes.
Saree consists of three parts, underskirt, blouse, and saree. There can be many instances where learning how to wear a saree can come in handy to you. In this article, we are going to show you how to wear a saree in 4 easy steps:
Step 1: Select a suitable underskirt and blouse
- You should select a suitable underskirt (Petticoat) that matches your saree color. You can select a crop top(blouse) according to your preference, depending upon how much skin you want to show. Underskirt and crop top are worn before draping the saree.
- The underskirt is worn from the waist down to the feet, whereas the blouse is the upper outfit. Often these can be restyled and worn in many different ways. Underskirt and blouse are considered an extremely important part of a saree, and choosing them correctly can make the attire look phenomenal.
- Traditional underskirts have cotton drawstrings which may be uncomfortable for a lot of people. Try wearing an underskirt with elastic to make it super comfortable. However, whichever underskirt you are using, make sure it makes a tight barrier between your skin and the dressing, so everything stays put.
- Blouse can vary from sleeveless to long sleeves, or you can even design your blouse, which goes best with your blouse.
Step 2: Draping the saree
- Take one end of the saree, and tuck it into your underskirt. Complete the round and keep tucking it in until you reach the point where you started. Once you have tucked it around about your navel, reach the other end of the saree.
- Take the fabric and bring it around your back, and place it over your left shoulder. This is the pallu of our saree. Make sure that it hits the back of your knee; you can have a longer pallu as well.
- Take the edge closest to you and pull it tight around your body and pin it near your right thigh. Make sure to grab all of the fabric while you pin it, which includes all of the layers and the underskirt. This will keep your saree in place.
Step 3: Making pleats
- We will be left with a loop of fabric, which we will use for pleating. Hold it with the three fingers and guide the saree with the help of your pinky and thumb to start pleating with the left fabric.
- This would cover 5-7 pleats, and once you are done with it, tuck it into your skirt neatly. Make sure that your pleats are well aligned. Secure it with a safety pin so that you can move around comfortably without ruining your attire.
Step 4: Setting your pallu
- Now, let go of your pallu, wrap it around tightly again, pull it over your chest, and place it over your left shoulder. You have the choice to either leave your pallu free or bring it together on your left shoulder.
- If you are leaving it free, pin one edge of the fabric to your left shoulder and let the remaining pallu fall down your left hand.
- If you want to pleat it together, you can make vertical pleats, the border of your saree being the first pleat. Secure it with a pin to keep it arranged.
And that’s it! You are ready! You can add extra safety pins to keep your saree in place. You can also wear bangles, bracelets, and earrings matching your saree to enhance your look.
