How to cancel Train Tickets?
With the new updated rules and guidelines levied by the Government of India, the act of cancelling one’s ticket would not bear any cancellation charges or fee as any penalty and hence, you can avail the full amount as a refund on your bookings that were made by you.
Note: The facility of full refund shall only be available to those who have booked their train tickets via Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation’s (IRCTC) official website and therefore, shall not be applicable for the bookings made from other ticket-booking portals. These guidelines are only till the COVID-19 outbreak and further shall be updated.
Counter Ticket
- Enter your designated PNR number, train number and the captcha code which is asked by IRCTC on their portal.
- Click on the checkbox and hit confirm.
- Enter the One Time Password (OTP) received on your registered mobile number and you shall be shown your PNR details.
- Once read thoroughly by you, click on the “Cancel Ticket” tab and the details regarding the cancellation would be shown along with the refund amount on your booking’s cancellation.
- An SMS message shall be sent to you on your registered mobile number with all the PNR details and the refund amount can be then collected from the nearby PRS locations or the journey’s commencing station.
- You can also claim your refund amount by offline means by simply visiting the PRS counter that is nearest to you and fill out the cancellation requisition form with the designated PNR number and cancelled train number and all the other details of your booking.
Note: The refund will be generated to you in the same mode as that of the mode of payment for the fare of the train’s tickets.
Cancel E-Tickets
- Visit the IRCTC website and click on the “booked tickets” tab for a list of options to pop up on your screen.
- Select the desired ticket that you wish to cancel and claim a refund for.
- The refund shall be credited back to the bank account that was used for the payment of such ticket and hence, the ticket shall stand cancelled and also, these can only be cancelled through online mode and from the IRCTC website and not on-site or their counters.
Note: Cancellation shall be done prior to the preparation of the chart for the respective train in the case of e-tickets.
Things to remember to cancel Train Tickets:
- You can claim a full-fledged refund on your respective booking if the cancellation is done within 4 days of the scheduled departure of the train and if the train status gets marked as “CANCELLED” in the PRS.
- No refunds shall be given on “confirmed” and TATKAL tickets.
- No refunds for the “confirmed” e-tickets after the chart for the train has been prepared and posted by IRCTC.
Basic Rules:
- Only users with the registered mobile number can avail of the facility of cancelling their tickets through the online portal.
- DO not panic if the status shows only “Cancelled” and not “refunded” as it is encoded in their system. This shall imply that only the respective seat has been released and the refund amount for your booking shall be displayed on your screen shortly.
