How to Disable Laptop Keyboard by 5 Easy Method

When using an external mouse, most laptops include a built-in feature that disables the touchpad. However, there is no option to turn off the laptop keyboard. The laptop keyboard, on the other hand, is a little more difficult to deactivate for a reason.

A laptop is unlikely to be a desktop computer because it requires basic attachments such as a mouse, keyboard, and display to function. However, with a laptop, you get all of your peripherals in one box. So, if you dropped your laptop and the keyboard isn’t working correctly, here’s what you should do. You may use an external keyboard to replace the laptop’s keyboard and get back to work! Alternatively, you may simply replace the complete built-in keyboard, which will save you a lot of money.

So, if you want to make it easier, you may just attach an external one. You might wish to deactivate your laptop keyboard in this scenario, or in many circumstances, to prevent undesired or inadvertent alphabets from being entered on your word document.

Method 1:

  • Go to the Start menu on your laptop.
  • Enter “device management” into the search box.
  • Go to Device Manager and select it.
  • In Device Manager, look for the keyboard.
  • To disable the keyboard driver, click the “+” symbol to open a drop-down selection.
  • To make something permanent or uninstall it, you’ll normally need to restart your computer.

Method 2:

Installing a third-party device manager from CNET was advised as the best-voted option in that same Tom’s Guide thread.

Some customers were able to install a third-party device manager that allowed them to disable their laptop keyboard driver rather than removing it.

It’s critical to build a restore point on your Windows, Macintosh, or Linux operating system so you can undo changes if something goes wrong.

It’s also a good idea to have a backup drive for your computer.

Method 3:

The best-voted option comes from d3vid, who said that his laptop didn’t have a “Disable” option. When he tried to uninstall it, he was forced to restart his computer, after which the driver was reinstalled. His answer was to use an incompatible driver on purpose.

The answer is as follows:

  • Activate Device Manager.
  • “Update Driver” is the option to choose.
  • Select “existing drivers only” if/when prompted to “check online or use existing drivers.”
  • Incompatible drivers will be shown (or “Only use compatible drivers” will be de-selected).
  • Select one.
  • Restart your computer.

Your laptop’s keyboard (as well as the touchpad) should now be turned off.

If you wish to reinstall the keyboard, follow these steps:

  • Choose a compatible driver.
  • Restart your computer.

Method 4:

  • It follows the same general style as the previous solutions, with the exception that if there is no Disable option, the default laptop keyboard will be identified and re-installed if the Device Manager scans for new hardware.
  • In such a case, you’ll have to start over with the removal process.

Method 5:

If you want to disable your keyboard temporarily, follow these steps:

  • Run Keyboard Locker after downloading it.
  • Go ahead and download Keyboard Locker to get started. Unzip the Keyboard Locker folder to a location on your hard drive where you wish to store it. and then double-click the Keyboard Locker folder. There are several files within. The key two files are “KeyboardLocker.exe” and “KeyboardLocker.ahk,” which include several icon files and a readme.
  • If you don’t already have AutoHotKey installed, double-click “KeyboardLocker.exe” to start it. This file is an AutoHotKey script that has been built to run as a standalone application, so it may be used without AutoHotKey.
  • Almost all keyboard input, including function keys, Caps Lock, Num Lock, and the majority of special keys on media keyboards, has been disabled. A few key combinations, like as Ctrl+Alt+Delete and Win+L, will still operate, but they are exceedingly unlikely to be accidentally touched by a paw or small hand.
  • To re-enable keyboard input, type the word “unlock” into the search box. The Keyboard icon returns to normal, indicating that the keyboard has been unlocked.

Conclusion :

You may wish to utilize an external keyboard with your laptop if some of the keys on your laptop are broken or if you just want to use extra functions. It might be anything, but many users are hesitant to use an external keyboard when the laptop keyboard is enabled since positioning the external keyboard with the built-in keyboard can be difficult.

When it comes to disabling a laptop keyboard, you have a variety of alternatives. However, for Windows, we found the Device Manager option to be the most straightforward and secure. If you wish to shut your computer permanently, you must go into advanced settings, where a mistake might cause your computer to crash. We also discussed several third-party programmes that may or may not give all of the functions or may just disable both devices. In every regard, Device Manager is the most effective method for turning off a laptop keyboard.
